Which Berlin authority do you register with?

Two different Berlin authorities handle two different things, and founders often mix them up:

• Commercial register (_Handelsregister_): for the whole of Berlin this is kept at a single court – the Amtsgericht Charlottenburg (Hardenbergstraße 31, 10623 Berlin). Your district doesn’t matter; every Berlin GmbH and UG is entered here.
• Trade registration (_Gewerbeanmeldung_): Berlin has no central _Gewerbeamt_. You register with the _Ordnungsamt_ of the _Bezirk_ where your Betriebssitz (business seat) sits – each of the 12 boroughs runs its own office. Here your district does matter.

Whether the Ordnungsamt accepts a virtual office address for a Gewerbeanmeldung is a local, business-type-dependent call: office and digital trades are typically fine, while retail, hospitality or workshop trades are expected to register at the real operating address.
