Doing business in Hamburg

Thinking about basing your business in Hamburg? Here's what you need to know about the city, its districts, and registering your company.

Hamburg's business districts – and who they suit

Hamburg is a city of distinct quarters wrapped around the Alster lakes and the Elbe, and the district you choose says something about your business. Here is where you can get an Olea address today, and how the city’s central business areas compare:

  • Hamburg-Altstadt – the historic old town and the city’s commercial and civic heart, gathered around the Rathaus and the Binnenalster. Our Alter Wall location sits on a restored listed sandstone ensemble between the Rathaus and the Alsterfleet, directly opposite the Neuer Wall luxury shopping mile, with Jungfernstieg, the Speicherstadt and the Elbphilharmonie close by. It’s the most prestigious, blue-chip option – ideal for law firms, finance, consultancies and media businesses that want an instantly recognisable Hanseatic address.
  • Neustadt – the old town’s western twin, running from the Gänsemarkt and the Großneumarkt down towards the harbour. Our Ludwig-Erhard-Straße location sits opposite the Hamburger Michel, a couple of minutes from the Großneumarkt and a block from the Stadthausbrücke S-Bahn, within walking distance of the harbour and the Reeperbahn. Central and superbly connected, but a touch more relaxed than the Altstadt – well suited to freelancers, startups, consultancies and financial-services firms.

Weighing up the rest of the city? HafenCity is Europe’s largest inner-city regeneration district, anchored by the Elbphilharmonie and increasingly popular with corporates and digital firms; St. Pauli and the Schanzenviertel are Hamburg’s creative, media and startup quarter; Altona and Ottensen form a media-and-tech cluster west of the centre; and City Süd (Hammerbrook) is the established office district south-east of the Hauptbahnhof. These are areas we are expanding into as we add locations. Wherever you choose, every Olea location includes the same complete virtual office – only the address and the price change.

Hamburg's business landscape

Hamburg is the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg (Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg), Germany’s second-largest city with around 1.9 million residents and the hub of a metropolitan region of more than 5 million. Its economy is built on the Port of Hamburg – Germany’s largest seaport and Europe’s third-largest, after Rotterdam and Antwerp – and the trade and logistics that flow through it, which earned the city its name as Germany’s "Tor zur Welt" (Gateway to the World). But it is far more diversified than the port alone: Hamburg is Germany’s media and publishing capital (Der Spiegel, Die Zeit, Gruner + Jahr) and a centre of advertising and the creative industries; the world’s third-largest civil-aviation location, where Airbus runs its largest German site alongside Lufthansa Technik; and home to blue-chip headquarters including the Otto Group (one of the world’s largest e-commerce and mail-order groups), Beiersdorf (Nivea), the shipping line Hapag-Lloyd, copper producer Aurubis and New Work SE (XING). It also sustains a lively startup and digital scene and growing clusters in renewable energy, life sciences and healthcare.

It’s a prosperous, international city – one of Germany’s wealthiest – and exceptionally well connected. Hamburg Airport (HAM) is linked to the centre in around 25 minutes by the S1 S-Bahn; Hamburg Hauptbahnhof is one of Germany’s busiest stations and a major long-distance and high-speed rail hub; and an extensive U-Bahn and S-Bahn network ties the city together. It’s a base that works for everyone from a solo founder to an expanding international corporate.

Registering a business in Hamburg

Whatever you are setting up, an Olea Hamburg address is a serviceable address (ladungsfähige Anschrift) accepted by all the relevant authorities:

  • GmbH or UG (company formation) – your company is entered in the Handelsregister (commercial register) kept by the Amtsgericht Hamburg, the central registry court (Registergericht) for the entire city-state. You will need a notary, and we provide the consent-to-use documentation they require.
  • Gewerbe (trade registration) – Hamburg has no single central trade office. Sole traders and trading companies file a Gewerbeanmeldung with the Fachamt Verbraucherschutz, Gewerbe und Umwelt of the Bezirksamt responsible for their business address; the city is divided into seven boroughs (Bezirke), and both our Altstadt and Neustadt addresses fall under Bezirksamt Hamburg-Mitte. Registration can be completed online through the Hamburg Service portal.
  • Tax registration – your competent Finanzamt issues your tax number (Steuernummer); registration is completed online via ELSTER (the Fragebogen zur steuerlichen Erfassung), which must be submitted within a month of starting your activity.
  • Freelancers (Freiberufler) – genuinely freelance professions skip the Gewerbeanmeldung and register directly with the Finanzamt.

In every case you can use your Olea Hamburg address, keep your home address private, and rely on us to receive and digitise the official post these authorities send.

FAQs

Questions about virtual offices in Hamburg

Everything you need to know about a Hamburg virtual office and how Olea works.

The best virtual office in Hamburg is the one that fits your business: a genuinely serviceable address accepted for the Handelsregister, Impressum, Gewerbeanmeldung and Finanzamt, in a district that suits your clients, with transparent pricing and flexible mail handling. Every Olea Hamburg location meets these criteria, starting from €79/month, and is a real office or coworking space you can visit and book.

Hamburg virtual offices start from €79/month at our Neustadt location on Ludwig-Erhard-Straße, with the exact price depending on the address and district you choose – a prestige address on Alter Wall in the Hamburg-Altstadt (from €179/month) costs more than one nearer the harbour. Every Hamburg location includes the same complete service; the price simply reflects the address. Annual plans save 15%, with no setup fees or deposits.

We have hand-picked offices in central Hamburg across the Hamburg-Altstadt and Neustadt districts – from Alter Wall, between the Rathaus and the Neuer Wall luxury mile, to Ludwig-Erhard-Straße opposite the Michel near the Großneumarkt. Use the map above to see every live, bookable Hamburg location with its address and current price, and browse the Hamburg directory to filter by district, features and budget.

It depends on your business and who you're trying to impress. Hamburg-Altstadt is the city's prestigious commercial heart around the Rathaus and the Neuer Wall – ideal for law firms, finance, consultancies and media businesses that want a premium, recognisable address. Neustadt, just to the west towards the harbour and the Michel, is equally central but a little more relaxed, and suits freelancers, startups and professional-services firms. Consider where your clients expect you to be and what fits your brand – every location offers the same complete service.

Yes. Every GmbH and UG must provide a domestic serviceable address (ladungsfähige Anschrift) under § 8 Abs. 4 GmbHG. An Olea Hamburg address meets this requirement and is accepted by the commercial register – in Hamburg, GmbH and UG entries are filed with the Amtsgericht Hamburg, the central registry court for the city-state – and by notaries. We provide the consent-to-use documentation your notary needs.

Yes. Anyone operating a trade (Gewerbe) must register it with the local trade office (§ 14 GewO). Hamburg has no central Gewerbeamt – you register with the Gewerbe office of the Bezirksamt responsible for your address (our central locations sit within Bezirksamt Hamburg-Mitte), and registration can be completed online via the Hamburg Service portal. (Genuinely freelance professions – Freiberufler – register with the Finanzamt instead.)

Yes. German law requires commercial websites to show an Impressum with a serviceable address (§ 5 DDG). You can list your Olea Hamburg address to meet this without exposing your home address, and still reliably receive any official letters or cease-and-desist notices (Abmahnungen).

Your Hamburg address is accepted by all the relevant German authorities – the Handelsregister (Amtsgericht Hamburg), the Finanzamt (tax office), and the borough Gewerbeamt (for our central locations, Bezirksamt Hamburg-Mitte) – and for your Impressum. It’s also recognised by banks, payment providers, and online marketplaces that require a verifiable business address.

It depends on the option you choose. With the digital mailbox (included as standard at both Hamburg locations), letters are scanned and uploaded to your online mailbox, typically within 5–7 days of receipt. You can also have originals forwarded to you by post (from €10/month + postage) or collect them in person at your Hamburg location, where in-person pickup and daily, weekly or monthly forwarding are both available.

Sign up and pay in minutes. Once you've completed our compliance form (typically 10–15 minutes), we review it and activate your account as soon as possible – usually the same day. As soon as it's active, you can start using your Hamburg address and receiving mail.

Meeting rooms (from €10/hour), coworking desks (from €25/day), and private offices (from €75/day) at your Hamburg location and across our network. Workspace packages are also available for regular users. Availability and pricing vary by location.
